A week after receiving an epidural injection for his ailing back, Cavs forward Lebron James participated in “light work” during a Cavs practice on October 22nd.  The treatment comes after Lebron played in two preseason games and then decided to undergo treatment in an effort to be ready for the start of the regular season.  “[It was] my plan to be ready for every game to help our team win,” said Lebron when asked about his decision to undergo treatment.

During the 2014-2015 season, Lebron missed a career high 13 games due to a multitude of injuries, including a persistent back strain which caused Lebron to be sidelined for two weeks in the beginning of the season.  During that two weeks he received an initial injection for his back and continued for the rest of the regular season and playoffs seeming unaffected by any further pain.  This second injection comes 10 months later and Lebron has stated that he would not rule out a third injection during the season, if needed.  It remains to be seen if the 4 time MVP winner will be able to continue his incredible work ethic, both on and off the court.  Lebron has played over 43,000 minutes in just 12 seasons with both the Cavs and Miami heat.  Despite Lebron’s regimented fitness schedule off the court, that amount of minutes can take its toll on the spine and can lead to injuries as a result of repetitive strain.

In many cases, the need for multiple injections can signify an underlying degenerative condition of the spine.  However, many patients are able to find relief through a course of anti-inflammatory injections and physical therapy.  It is only when these modalities fail to provide relief that surgery is considered.
