If you’re thinking about Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery to treat a chronic back or neck condition, you probably want to know about life after surgery. The surgical process can be broken down into three time frames: before, during and after. In this post, we’ll examine the “after”.

Immediately After Surgery

After your procedure, you’ll be brought to the recovery room with nurses and stay until the surgical anesthesia wears off.  Once the anesthesia has worn off and you are able to walk and perform some basic tasks, you can be discharged.  In most instances, patients are able to return home the same day as their procedure due to newer techniques that reduce the size of the incision and shorten the operative time.

At Home

After you’re discharged from the facility, you will be given pain medication and at-home instructions. During the first week, it is important to rest and limit strenuous activity.

The First Post-Op Visit

Your first follow up visit is usually scheduled for 1-2 weeks after your procedure so that the surgeon can monitor your progress.

Depending on the nature of your job, you may be able to return to work after this visit.  However, if your job is physically demanding, you will likely need to remain out of work until it is safe to return.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy may be recommended at the four-week mark after surgery.  Sessions typically involve:

  • Stretching exercises
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Education on spinal precautions

A tremendous benefit of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery is that it decreases the recovery time needed to get back to peak form.

Life After Spine Surgery

After the recovery period, quality of life improves drastically for most patients.  The relief in pain allows you to once again be active, social and healthy without having to worry about pain.  Patients often talk about all the activities they missed doing while they were in pain and how much they love doing them again after their procedure.
