Training: Dr. Koerner completed a two-year surgical and research fellowship at the Rothman Institute and Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Prior to fellowship, Dr. Koerner completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, New Jersey Medical School in Newark, NJ.
Education: Dr. John Koerner completed his undergraduate at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem North Carolina with a Bachelors of Science degree. He then received his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, New Jersey Medical School in Newark, New Jersey.
Special Interests: Dr. Koerner has special interest in treating degenerative conditions of the cervical and lumbar spine, including spinal stenosis.
Accomplishments: Dr. Koerner has published numerous peer-reviewed articles on a variety of spinal disorders, and frequently presents at national and international meetings. He received an award for Outstanding Paper in Basic Science from the North American Spine Society. He is currently the Deputy Editor for the Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques.
Publications: Dr. Koerner has edited two books entitled “Recent Advances in Spinal Surgery” and “Differential Diagnosis in Spinal Surgery” which are both scheduled to be released soon.
Philosophy: Treating neck and low back pathology can be difficult because all patients are unique, and there are many pain generators throughout the body. By completing a thorough history and exam, most conditions can be effectively treated with conservative measures. If these conservative therapies fail, however, surgery can be very effective.
